What is the Worldwide101 story? What inspired you to start your business?
I was born and raised in France. In my early twenties I moved to New York and then started traveling extensively as a Project Manager, to Asia, Australia, North America and in various parts of both Eastern and Western Europe. Over the past twenty-one years I’ve worked for companies such as Regus with a focus on supporting small businesses to be effective as they scale.
In November 2009, I returned to France and wanted to find a way to continue to work globally but in the comfort of my own home! So I started looking for online work where my skills and background could be utilized.
In my search I noticed three trends 1) an increase of skilled talent looking to work from home 2) amazing tools and technology to support “remote” work and 3) small businesses looking to hire virtually for projects or ongoing work without having to worry about overheads. This is when the idea of a virtual assistant business came to mind.
Worldwide101 started off with just me providing services to entrepreneurs and small businesses globally. Over the months and years we have grown to a team of nine virtual assistants located and working virtually on four continents supporting client globally. We provide virtual personalized virtual support, which means that we assign a dedicated team member who just happens to be half a world away.
How long has the journey been?
Worldwide101 started in November 2009 – so it’s been two and a half years now.
What do you enjoy most about running your own business?
There are many things! It ranges from the simple pleasure of setting my own schedule to learning new things and letting my creativity run wild!
I used to think that there were so many restrictions with what I could and couldn’t do that even when I started my own business I still held back wondering whether “I should or could”. Then realized it was up to me! That was quite a thrill and I very much enjoy the freedom to experiment.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Not allowing a personal situation to override a business decision. There are so many factors to consider when making a decision; customers and staff as well as financial viability. It’s always a great exercise to weigh everything carefully and make sure all factors have been considered.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about or just starting out in business?
There are three things I would say:
1) Do your homework – it’s not enough to have a great idea. Make sure it’s viable, practical and useful. Don’t be infatuated with your concept!
2) Stay focused – Success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes a great deal of effort, focus and perseverance to create something great.
3) Keep the company of those who believe in you – when it gets hard (and it will) galvanize your friends and well-wishers so they can encourage you and remind you of why you started all this in the first place!
Where do you see your business in 5 – 10 years time?
Virtual professional support is just getting started. Right now, there are still many businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs who are unaware of the great benefits of hiring virtually and how easy it can be.
I anticipate that this will rapidly change and that within the next few years there will be an increase in businesses hiring help online. Worldwide101 will continue to be an established leader in this field, providing personalized, skilled, talented and trusted virtual professional support to companies globally.
Any other information or details you might like to add?
I want to encourage everyone who is inspired with a great idea and a passion to trust their guts, believe it’s possible and use their abilities to their full potential. Only great things can happen with such inspiration. Be awesome.
