We spoke with Janell Fowler, the Owner of BabyButton. Janell began her gorgeous handmade mums and bubs products when her 2 year old was only 2 months old. After 2 years the business has grown into something amazing, and she now has that enviable balance of work life and family life. We asked her how she achieved the best of both worlds…..

What is the BabyButton story? What inspired you to start your business?

I had my daughter Addison “Button” on New Year’s Eve 2009!  One of the immediate problems I faced as a new mum was how uncomfortable I felt breastfeeding in public. So, as an avid sewer, I made myself a cover exactly in the shape and form I needed. I used it at my mother’s group and was constantly being asked where I had bought it. They were disappointed when they realized that I handmade it and could not buy a similar design. Naturally, I started to make a few more and then a few more. Out of the demand my life changed a second time and BabyButton was born. I continued to build my business because I enjoyed the idea of independence, feeling I was accomplishing something with each sale, and the passion and enjoyment I got from the in’s and outs of starting a business from home with a young child!

How long has the journey been?

I have been on this journey for 2 years now! Though I don’t feel it has been that long as I have been on this ride, it just seems apart of my life now!

What do you enjoy most about running your own business?

I love that I can make my own hours and continue to be a stay at home mum. I like being creative, putting it into place and watching the results myself. I love that on my allocated ‘work days’ I can take an hour off to spend with my husband or have a brief moment of me time.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Finding the right fabrics that sit well with all customers! I have made it a point to select and have a large range of fabrics available at all times as I understand that each women has a different taste and may like something different than me or even their sister. I also like the idea that my customers are able to use products with prints that are only found on BabyButton Products!

Being a mum in business is tricky, what tips do you have for all those mums out there trying start a business from home with toddlers running around?

It can be done but scheduling is a must! It can become a challenge to feel you are on top of the business aspect while juggling the other balls of family, house and life unless you schedule! Making a schedule for not only how you are going to accomplish your work load but also when you will have time with your kids and for fun!

What advice would you give to someone thinking about or just starting out in business?

Pick a business that you are interested and have a passion for.  Starting a business from scratch that inspire and encourage you to continue through the tough times and take pleasure in the achievements of your business!

Where do you see your business in 5 – 10 years time?

In 5-10 years time I would like to see BabyButton products in stores internationally. I would like to take the company from a small Stay At Home Mum Business, who sews in her spare bedroom, into a large company that can supply product everywhere! I would also like to have a few other Branch off brands of various products that I will be able to continue to grow.
