Alli Price is not only successful, but also incredibly lovely! Motivating Mum is a fantastic concept, a site that I have personally visited a number of times over the last 6 months looking for inspiration and tips.

What is the Motivating Mum story, what inspired you to start your business?

I was living in the UK and had just launched my business as a life coach, in addition to having just had my first daughter, and remember sitting in front of the computer feeling lonely and a little isolated.

I decided to start a Businessmums’ Networking Lunch – in an attempt to get out and get some intelligent conversation and also expand my network. It turned out there were a lot of mums at home feeling just as I was and Motivating Mum in its current incarnation was born.

Since then, what I am experiencing as a mum in biz, in addition to all my other mums is always the inspiration for the projects I undertake and events I develop.

How long has the journey been?

Five years thus far but that includes three and a half years building the business in the UK and a year and a half in Oz.

What do you enjoy most about running your own business?

I love being in control of where the business is going and not having to negotiate with anyone, I love being able to create from the ground up and say ‘this is mine’, I love dropping off and picking my kids up from school, I love getting up when I want and wearing my pyjamas until 12 and I love watching Dr Phil while I work!

Most importantly, I love helping mums in business, people who really deserve it. Knowing that I am playing a part in helping them achieve their business dreams is truly the best feeling in the world!

And what are your least favourite parts?

After answering the question above I really can’t think of anything that bothers me about being in business that much, it all pales into insignificance. I was born to do this.

Being a mum in business is tricky, what tips do you have for all those mums out there trying to run a business from home with toddlers running around?

I plan not only my business for the day but also activities with my kids (big and small) – that way I ensure quality time when at work and play.

I have also gotten excellent at switching from mum to work mode and find, after much practice and discipline I can make the change very quickly and be present in whatever activity I am moving in to.

And, any time saving tips you’ve learnt along the way?

Save the tasks like writing articles and blogs for when your kids aren’t about – it’s much quicker to write when you’re not being distracted all the time. I do it at night.

I also prepare in my head for writing blogs or articles while washing the dishes or vacuuming so I’m not wasting time sitting in front of the computer trying to bash it out. By the time I sit down I have a rough draft ready to go.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about or just starting out in business?

Try and read a business article or blog post a day. I have learned so much about business from just reading it’s been amazing and you never know what new ideas or inspirations can come from your new education.
